Batik Air Malaysia launched its nonstop service between Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) and Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport on 1 July 2026, becoming the first low-cost carrier to operate a direct link between Malaysia and Australia’s largest city.

The route runs four times a week. Southbound departures leave KLIA in the evening and arrive Sydney the following morning. Northbound flights depart Sydney in the evening and land in Kuala Lumpur the next day. Flight time is approximately 8 hours 30 minutes.

What changes for travellers

Before this route, the most common options for Malaysia–Australia travel were Malaysia Airlines (full-service, typically RM1,800–2,500 economy one-way) or connecting itineraries via Singapore, Bali, or other hubs with two or more carriers. Batik Air’s entry introduces genuine budget competition on a route that has historically had limited pricing flexibility.

Launch fares were advertised from RM799 one-way for the Sydney–Kuala Lumpur sector. Fares at this level are promotional and sell quickly; expect prices to vary significantly as the route matures.

Batik Air operates a no-frills model - meals and checked baggage are paid add-ons. Factor this into any cost comparison with full-service alternatives, particularly for travellers carrying checked luggage.

For visitors arriving in Malaysia

Travellers from Sydney now have a direct connection into Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia’s main hub. From KLIA, the KLIA Ekspres train reaches KL Sentral in the city centre in 28 minutes, running every 15–20 minutes. The express is significantly faster than road transfers during peak traffic.

Many visitors use Kuala Lumpur as a starting base and travel onward by domestic flight or intercity train to Penang, Langkawi, or the east coast. Internal flights from KLIA2 (the budget terminal, a short shuttle from KLIA) are well served by AirAsia.
