Hotels in Malaysia: Where to Stay in Every City
Malaysia's accommodation landscape runs from converted Penang shophouses and colonial-era mansions to five-star Langkawi beach resorts and Borneo jungle lodges that put you metres from wild orangutan territory. The mid-range is also well-served: Kuala Lumpur has excellent-value business hotels and boutique guesthouses across every neighbourhood.
Value for money is real — a well-located 4-star hotel in KL or Penang costs a fraction of its Bangkok or Singapore equivalent. For longer trips, serviced apartments in KL can be rented by the week at monthly rates that undercut most hotel prices. We have written detailed where-to-stay guides for every city covered on this site.

Types of Accommodation
Heritage Hotels & Boutique Stays
Penang and Malacca have a strong culture of converted shophouses and colonial mansions — tiled floors, four-poster beds, and courtyard gardens. The Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion in Georgetown and Majestic Malacca are well-known examples. Kuching also has a growing scene of riverfront heritage guesthouses.
Beach Resorts
Langkawi clusters the highest concentration of beach resorts — The Datai Langkawi and Four Seasons sit at the top end. Redang, Perhentian, and Tioman have more casual island resort options. Sabah's Shangri-La Rasa Ria is the benchmark luxury resort on the west coast of Borneo.
Budget Hostels
Kuala Lumpur has a well-developed backpacker scene centred on Chinatown and Jalan Dang Wangi. Penang's Georgetown is also strong for budget travellers. Expect dorm beds from RM35–70 ($7–15) per night in the main cities. Most hostels include lockers, air-conditioning, and common areas.
Jungle Lodges & Eco-Stays
Borneo in particular has genuine jungle lodge accommodation — the Sukau Rainforest Lodge on the Kinabatangan River and Borneo Rainforest Lodge in Danum Valley are world-class wildlife lodges. The Cameron Highlands has tea estate guesthouses with cooler temperatures and mountain walks.
