Penang Cocktail Week 2026 opens today in George Town, running from 15–20 September under the theme “Welcome Home”. The annual event brings together bartenders, spirit brands, industry professionals, and cocktail enthusiasts for six days of tastings, masterclasses, and bar-takeover events across the city’s growing drinks scene.
George Town is Malaysia’s most internationally recognised food and drink destination — a UNESCO World Heritage city known for its layered culinary identity drawing from Chinese, Indian, Malay, and European traditions. Penang Cocktail Week builds on that reputation, positioning the city’s bars and cocktail culture alongside its hawker stalls and heritage shophouses.
What Happens During the Week
The event operates across participating bars throughout George Town’s old town. The format varies by venue:
Bar takeovers — guest bartenders from Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, and international markets take over service at Penang venues for one or more nights. These are often the most dynamic sessions, as visiting bartenders adapt their signature drinks to Penang ingredients.
Masterclasses and brand workshops — spirits brands host tasting sessions focusing on production, regional provenance, and cocktail technique. These run throughout the week and are ticketed separately from bar-entry events.
Collaborative menus — participating bars create limited cocktail menus for the week, often drawing on Penang’s culinary traditions. Past editions have featured drinks built around asam laksa, cendol, and Penang white curry flavour profiles.
Industry sessions — a trade day is scheduled for hospitality professionals, covering bar business development, spirits trends in Southeast Asia, and sustainability behind the bar.
The “Welcome Home” Theme
This year’s theme references both the nostalgia of Penang’s diaspora community — many George Town families have relatives across Southeast Asia, Australia, and the UK — and the city’s long-standing role as a crossroads where people of different backgrounds built a shared culinary and civic culture. The drinks industry framing plays on the idea of bartenders returning to a city they consider formative, or discovering it as a new creative home.
Penang as a Base
Penang is well-connected by air from Kuala Lumpur (about 1 hour), Singapore (about 1.5 hours), and several other regional hubs. George Town’s old town is compact and walkable, with most participating bars within a short tuk-tuk or Grab ride of one another.
Accommodation ranges from boutique heritage hotels in converted shophouses to international chain properties on the Gurney Drive waterfront. For the week of the cocktail festival, booking accommodation in George Town’s old town in advance is advisable — the area is consistently busy and prices reflect that.
