Malaysia Airlines to Launch Direct Flights from Shenzhen and Changsha from July 2026
Malaysia Airlines is expanding its East Asia network with three new routes to Kuala Lumpur launching between July and September 2026, opening direct options from two Chinese cities and reviving a Japan connection absent for 20 years.
From 2 July 2026, the airline will begin daily flights between Shenzhen and Kuala Lumpur. A week later, on 9 July, a new service from Changsha to Kuala Lumpur launches. Both routes build on an existing China network that already includes direct services from Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chengdu, and Xiamen — and are timed to amplify the Visit Malaysia 2026 campaign, which is targeting 43 million international arrivals this year.
For travellers from Japan, the headline news is the return of Fukuoka. Malaysia Airlines will resume five-times-weekly flights between Fukuoka and Kuala Lumpur from 2 September 2026 — the first direct service on that route in two decades. The resumption follows strong Japanese visitor demand and gives travellers in Fukuoka a direct path to Malaysia without the traditional Osaka or Tokyo connection.
All three routes terminate at KLIA, making Kuala Lumpur the entry point. From there, onward domestic connections reach Penang, Langkawi, Kota Kinabalu, Kuching, and Malaysia’s east coast islands. Our guide to getting around Malaysia covers how to plan those onward legs — including the domestic carriers, train options, and bus routes that link KL to the rest of the country.
For visitors from Shenzhen or Changsha planning their first Malaysia trip, the Kuala Lumpur things to do guide is a useful starting point before building out a wider itinerary.
We recommend booking early on the new Shenzhen and Changsha services — new routes frequently carry introductory fares that disappear once the initial promotional window closes.
