Best Hotels in Kota Bharu: Where to Stay in Kelantan's Capital

Traditional wooden buildings and market stalls in Kota Bharu, Kelantan, Malaysia

Kota Bharu is Malaysia’s most distinctly Malay city. The capital of Kelantan sits near the Thai border, runs on a conservative Islamic calendar that sees most businesses closed on Fridays, and operates cultural industries — batik printing, silver craft, hand-woven songket, traditional kite-making — that have largely disappeared elsewhere in peninsular Malaysia. It is not a city geared for international tourists, and that is precisely what makes it interesting. Accommodation is affordable, the Central Market is one of the best in the country, and access to the east coast beaches at Pantai Cahaya Bulan (10km north) is easy by local bus.

Prices below are approximate MYR per room per night at standard rates as of 2026.

City Centre: Markets, Crafts, and the Cultural District

The city centre — bounded by the Central Market (Pasar Besar Siti Khadijah), the Royal Museum, and Jalan Che Su — is the most useful base for short visits. Everything is within walking distance: the craft villages, the museum cluster, the night market on Jalan Pintu Pong, and the main bus terminal for onward travel to beaches and the Thai border.

Luxury

True luxury options in Kota Bharu are limited by the city’s scale. The closest equivalent is Hotel Grand Puteri — from approximately MYR 280 as of 2026 — which is the city’s most polished business-class hotel. Rooms are large and well-maintained, the pool is one of the few in the city centre, and the breakfast buffet covers both Malay and Western options adequately. It is not a destination hotel by any measure, but it sets the standard for Kota Bharu.

Mid-range

Hotel Perdana Kota Bharu — from approximately MYR 200 as of 2026 — is a reliable mid-range choice with a central location and consistent cleanliness. The rooms are functional rather than stylish, but the air conditioning is solid, the beds are comfortable, and the staff are helpful with directions to cultural sites and night markets. It represents the practical sweet spot for most visitors.

KB Mall Hotel — from approximately MYR 160 as of 2026 — occupies a position directly connected to KB Mall, which is the most convenient shopping centre for toiletries, pharmacies, and local food courts. The rooms are compact but clean, and the location puts you within a 10-minute walk of the Central Market.

Budget

Zeck’s Travellers Inn — from approximately MYR 55 for dorm beds, MYR 90 for private rooms, as of 2026 — is the best-established backpacker option in the city. It is a basic but functional guesthouse that has been welcoming travellers heading to and from Thailand for years. The common room is a good place to get local tips, and the owner can advise on bus connections to Rantau Panjang border crossing and onwards into southern Thailand.

Hotel Anika — from approximately MYR 90 as of 2026 — is a clean budget option in the centre with reliable air conditioning and private bathrooms. Nothing memorable, but no complaints either.

Getting around from the city centre: Kota Bharu is walkable within the historic core. Local buses (MYR 1–2) run frequently to Pantai Cahaya Bulan beach. Grab is available but coverage is thinner than in larger Malaysian cities. Bicycle rental is available from some guesthouses — the flat terrain makes it practical for day use.

Padang Garong and the Outskirts

Padang Garong is the commercial zone south of the city centre where most chain banks, larger shops, and newer hotels are concentrated. It is slightly removed from the cultural district but more convenient for arrivals by bus from Kuala Lumpur (the long-distance bus terminal is nearby).

Mid-range

Crystal Lodge — from approximately MYR 180 as of 2026 — offers larger rooms than most city-centre options and a quieter environment away from market noise. The location requires a short Grab to reach the cultural sites, but for visitors spending most of their time at the beaches north of the city, the slightly suburban position matters less.

Tune Hotel Kota Bharu — from approximately MYR 120–150 as of 2026 depending on room type — is a reliable budget-business option in this zone. The rooms are compact and efficiently designed. Tune’s model (add-ons cost extra but the base room is solid) suits transit visitors passing through en route to Thailand or the east coast beaches.

Getting around from Padang Garong: Local buses and Grab to the city centre take approximately 10 minutes. The Sultan Ismail Petra Airport is 9km from this area — a Grab costs approximately MYR 20–30.

Practical Notes

Friday closures: Kota Bharu is the only major Malaysian city where Friday is the weekly rest day (not Sunday). Most government offices, many restaurants, and traditional craft shops close on Fridays. Plan any market visits or craft village tours for Thursday afternoon or Saturday morning.

Airport access: Sultan Ismail Petra Airport is 9km from the city centre. Grab takes approximately 20–25 minutes and costs MYR 22–32 as of 2026. No dedicated airport bus exists — local taxis are metered but often negotiate fixed rates with visitors.

Border crossings: The Rantau Panjang land border crossing to Thailand (Sungai Golok on the Thai side) is 60km south-west of the city. Regular buses depart from the bus terminal. The Pengkalan Kubor ferry crossing to Thailand is 30km north.

Beaches: Pantai Cahaya Bulan (PCB), the main beach north of the city, has a small number of simple beach guesthouses from approximately MYR 80–120 per night. These suit travellers who prefer beach access over city amenities.

Best time to visit: The east coast monsoon season (November to January) brings heavy rain and occasional flooding to Kota Bharu. The dry period from February to October is more comfortable, though Kelantan’s interior temperatures can be high year-round.
