Getting Around Penang: Transport Guide for George Town and the Island

Penang is one of the easier Malaysian destinations to navigate without a rental car. George Town, the heritage core where most visitors spend the majority of their time, is compact enough to cover on foot. For destinations further afield — Batu Ferringhi, the national park, Penang Hill — a mix of Grab and the island’s bus network covers everything you need.

Walking George Town

The Unesco Heritage Zone in George Town covers roughly 2.5 square kilometres and is genuinely walkable. The major landmarks — Armenian Street, Clan Jetties, Fort Cornwallis, Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion, Penang Museum — are all within a 20–30 minute walk of each other. Most of the street art is concentrated in the heritage zone and rewards wandering rather than planning a fixed route.

Afternoon heat can be punishing between 12:00 and 15:00. We recommend planning longer walks for early morning (before 10:00) or evening, and retreating to coffee shops during the middle of the day.

Grab

Grab is the default choice for getting around Penang for most travellers. The app works reliably across the island, base fares are reasonable, and there is almost always a driver nearby in the central areas.

Typical fares from George Town:

• George Town to Batu Ferringhi: approximately RM 18–25
• George Town to Penang International Airport (PEN): approximately RM 20–30
• George Town to Penang Hill (Air Itam): approximately RM 12–18
• George Town to Penang National Park (Teluk Bahang): approximately RM 22–30

Surge pricing applies during evening rush hours (17:00–19:00) and at weekends. For airport pickups, wait for your driver at the designated Grab pickup area outside Arrivals.

Rapid Penang Buses

Rapid Penang runs a network of bus routes across the island. Fares start at RM 1.40 and cap at approximately RM 3 for island-wide routes, making the buses very cheap by comparison to taxis. They are slower than Grab and run on less predictable schedules, but for fixed destinations they are a solid budget option.

Key routes for visitors:

• Bus 101: Komtar → Gurney Drive → Tanjung Bungah → Batu Ferringhi → Teluk Bahang. This single route covers the northern coastal strip including the beaches.
• Bus 401: Komtar → Penang International Airport. Useful for budget travellers; the journey takes around 45 minutes.
• Bus 203: Komtar → Penang Butterfly Farm and Penang National Park area.
• Bus 204: Komtar → Penang Hill (Air Itam). Connects to the funicular station.

Komtar bus terminal, inside the Komtar tower complex in central Georgetown, is the hub for all Rapid Penang routes. You can buy prepaid transit cards (Touch ‘n Go) at 7-Eleven outlets to avoid carrying exact change.

Penang Hill Funicular Railway

The Penang Hill funicular (Bukit Bendera) runs from Air Itam station to the hilltop at 830 metres elevation. The round trip fare is approximately RM 30 for adults and RM 15 for children as of 2026. The funicular operates from 06:30 to 22:00 daily, with departures every 10 minutes. Queues build quickly during public holidays and weekend mornings — arrive before 09:00 for the shortest waits.

From the hilltop you get a sweeping view of George Town and the mainland, and on a clear day, you can see as far as Kedah Peak. The ride itself takes around 5 minutes each way.

Trishaws

Trishaws are a legitimate way to explore the heritage streets and are primarily used by visitors rather than locals. Drivers cluster around the ferry terminal and along Armenian Street. Negotiate the fare before you board — a short ride within the heritage zone runs approximately RM 10–20, while a longer sightseeing loop lasting 30–45 minutes typically costs RM 30–50. The pace is slow enough to photograph the street art and shophouses as you pass.

They are not the most practical daily transport, but a trishaw ride through the heritage zone is worth doing once.

Renting a Motorbike or Bicycle

Several shops along Chulia Street and around the Penang Road area rent bicycles (approximately RM 15–25 per day) and motorbikes (approximately RM 35–60 per day for a manual 115cc). A valid driving licence is required for motorbikes. Cycling is a reasonable way to cover the heritage zone and the northern seafront at a comfortable pace; the terrain is flat in central Penang.

Helmets are legally required for motorcyclists in Malaysia. Rental shops provide basic helmets, though quality varies.

The Penang Bridge and Penang Ferry

Penang is connected to the mainland (Butterworth) by two routes:

Penang Bridge: The 24km bridge carries vehicle traffic including buses connecting Penang to destinations across Peninsular Malaysia. Coaches from KL, Ipoh, and other cities use this crossing. If you are arriving by intercity bus, you will arrive at Sungai Nibong terminal on the island’s eastern side (around 8km from central Georgetown — take Grab from there).

Penang Ferry: The old ferry service between Butterworth and George Town’s Pengkalan Weld jetty was suspended for refurbishment in 2023. Check current status before planning to use it — the crossing was historically 20 minutes and cost RM 1.20. Express Penang Boats services from Lumut and Langkawi continue to operate from Swettenham Pier (check current schedules).

Getting to and from Penang International Airport (PEN)

Penang International Airport sits on the southern tip of the island, about 16km from central George Town.

• Grab: RM 20–30, around 20–30 minutes without traffic.
• Rapid Penang Bus 401: RM 2.70, approximately 45 minutes to Komtar.
• Taxis: Fixed-rate taxi coupons are sold at the airport taxi counter; prices to central Georgetown are around RM 40–55.

There is no direct rail connection to the airport.

Practical Tips

George Town’s streets are mostly one-way and parking is tight. If you rent a car on the island, be aware that driving in central Georgetown is more frustrating than walking or taking Grab. A car makes most sense if you plan to explore the western side of the island (Balik Pulau, Pulau Betong) or make a day trip to Penang National Park independently.

Touch ‘n Go (the Malaysian prepaid transit card) works on all Rapid Penang buses. Load it at 7-Eleven stores or at Komtar terminal. Most locals also use TNG for Penang Bridge tolls — if you rent a car, buy a card to avoid cash queues.
