Flights to Malaysia — Booking Tips, Airlines & Best Deals
Malaysia sits at the crossroads of Southeast Asia’s busiest air routes, making it well-connected from virtually every continent. Whether you are heading for Kuala Lumpur’s skyline, Penang’s food scene, or Borneo’s rainforests, here is what we recommend knowing before booking.
Malaysia’s Major International Airports
Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL) is the country’s primary gateway, located about 50 km south of central Kuala Lumpur in Sepang. It handles the vast majority of long-haul flights and has two terminals: KLIA (full-service carriers) and KLIA2 (budget carriers, primarily AirAsia). Combined, the two terminals process over 60 million passengers annually.
Penang International Airport (PEN) serves the northern region and is the second-busiest international airport. It handles direct flights from Singapore, Bangkok, Taipei, Hong Kong, and several Chinese cities. The airport sits about 16 km south of George Town.
Kota Kinabalu International Airport (BKI) is the main gateway to Sabah and Malaysian Borneo. It receives direct flights from Seoul, Taipei, Hong Kong, Singapore, and several Chinese cities, plus extensive domestic connections.
Kuching International Airport (KCH) serves Sarawak, the other Borneo state. It has direct flights from Singapore and domestic connections throughout Malaysia.
Langkawi International Airport (LGK) serves the popular resort island with direct flights from Singapore and seasonal charters, plus domestic services from KL and Penang.
Airlines Serving Malaysia
From the UK, there are no non-stop flights. The most popular options are Malaysia Airlines via Kuala Lumpur (one-stop from London Heathrow with a connection in another hub), Singapore Airlines via Singapore, Cathay Pacific via Hong Kong, and Qatar Airways or Emirates via their respective Gulf hubs. Flight time from London to KL is approximately 12-13 hours non-stop (Malaysia Airlines operated this route historically and has periodically resumed it).
From the US, there are no direct flights. Common routing options include Cathay Pacific via Hong Kong, Japan Airlines or ANA via Tokyo, Korean Air via Seoul, and Singapore Airlines via Singapore. Total travel time from the US West Coast is approximately 18-20 hours including connections.
From Australia, AirAsia X and Malaysia Airlines operate direct flights from Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, and other cities. Perth to KL is approximately 5.5 hours — one of the shortest connections to Southeast Asia from Australia.
From Asia, connections are extensive. Singapore to KL is one of the world’s busiest air routes, with flights departing roughly every 30 minutes on Malaysia Airlines, Singapore Airlines, AirAsia, Scoot, and others. Bangkok, Jakarta, Manila, Hong Kong, Taipei, Seoul, and Tokyo all have multiple daily direct flights.
AirAsia deserves special mention as Malaysia’s largest airline and Asia’s biggest budget carrier. Its hub at KLIA2 offers remarkably cheap fares across the region. AirAsia X handles medium- and long-haul routes.
Malaysia Airlines is the national carrier, offering full-service flights with strong connections throughout Asia, Australia, the Middle East, and London.
Best Time to Book for Deals
Malaysia has no single high season across the whole country — the east and west coasts have opposite monsoon patterns. However, flight prices peak during Chinese New Year (January/February), European and Australian school holidays (June-August, December), and Hari Raya celebrations.
The cheapest fares typically appear for March, May, and September to early November departures, when demand from most source markets drops.
For the best prices, we recommend booking 8 to 12 weeks ahead for regional flights within Asia and 3 to 5 months ahead for long-haul routes from Europe, Australia, or North America.
Return flights from Singapore to KL start from approximately SGD 80-120 on budget carriers as of 2026. From London, expect approximately £400-550 in shoulder season, rising to £700+ during peak periods as of 2026. From Sydney, returns range from approximately AUD 400-600 in off-peak to AUD 800+ during school holidays as of 2026.
Domestic Flights Within Malaysia
Domestic flights are essential for reaching Borneo — there is no land or rail link between Peninsular Malaysia and East Malaysia. KL to Kota Kinabalu takes approximately 2 hours 30 minutes. KL to Kuching is about 1 hour 45 minutes.
On the peninsula, domestic flights connect KL with Penang (approximately 1 hour), Langkawi (approximately 1 hour 15 minutes), Kota Bharu (approximately 1 hour), and Johor Bahru (approximately 50 minutes).
AirAsia dominates domestic routes with fares starting from approximately MYR 50-100 one-way if booked well ahead as of 2026. Malaysia Airlines, Firefly, and Batik Air Malaysia also operate domestic services, sometimes at competitive fares.
For peninsular travel, the ETS train service between KL and Penang (approximately 4 hours) and KL to Ipoh (approximately 2.5 hours) can be competitive with flying once you factor in airport transfers.
Budget Tips
Fly into KLIA2 on AirAsia. Fares at the budget terminal are consistently lower than full-service equivalents at KLIA, especially for regional routes.
Be flexible on dates. Shifting departure by 2-3 days around public holidays can save 40-60% on routes to Malaysia, particularly during Chinese New Year and Hari Raya.
Consider alternative entry points. Flying into Singapore and taking a short connecting flight or bus to Malaysia can sometimes be cheaper than flying directly to KL, especially from Europe.
Book bags separately. AirAsia and other budget carriers charge for all checked luggage and seat selection. Travelling with carry-on only can halve the fare on short regional routes.
Use fare comparison tools to check across the many carriers serving Malaysia. With budget and full-service airlines competing on the same routes, price differences on identical dates can be substantial.
