Semporna is a small fishing port on the south-eastern tip of Sabah that has become one of the world’s best-known dive destinations, primarily as the gateway to Sipadan Island. Sipadan sits about 30km offshore and is rated among the top five dive sites on earth for its dramatic wall diving, green turtle nesting grounds, and barracuda tornadoes. The town itself is a functional transit point — colourful, busy, and built partly on stilts over the sea — rather than a polished resort destination.
Most visitors spend one to two nights in Semporna before or after their island dive package. Some dive resorts on Mabul Island offer all-inclusive packages where guests travel directly to the island and never stay in Semporna proper. Either approach works; it depends on your dive operator.

Semporna Waterfront Hotel (Semporna town) — A straightforward mid-budget town hotel with air-conditioned rooms, a basic breakfast, and walking distance to the seafood waterfront restaurants. The standard option if you want a reliable room in Semporna without the floating-resort novelty. From approximately MYR 130–250 per night as of 2026.
Mid-Range: Island Dive Resorts on Mabul Island: Approximately MYR 350–800 Per Night
Most serious divers stay on Mabul Island rather than in Semporna town. Mabul is 25 minutes by speedboat from Semporna and offers easier early-morning access to dive sites. Accommodation here is packaged with diving; standalone room-only bookings are less common.
Mabul Ocean Resort (Mabul Island) — A well-established dive resort on Mabul with comfortable chalets over the water, an on-site dive centre, and packages that include Sipadan day trips. Rooms are clean and functional; the sunset views from the water chalets are excellent. From approximately MYR 400–700 per night with half-board and diving as of 2026.
Billabong Scuba Mabul (Mabul Island) — A mid-range dive resort known for good boat organisation and consistent Sipadan permit allocation. The accommodation is simple wooden chalets; the operation is the focus. Popular with photographers targeting the macro marine life for which Mabul is famous. Luxury Dive Resorts: Approximately MYR 800–2,500+ Per Night
Sipadan-Mabul Resort (SMART) (Mabul Island) — One of the original resorts on Mabul, with a strong track record for Sipadan permit access and an experienced dive team. Water chalets, a spa, and a well-organised operation. Among the more polished all-inclusive experiences in the Semporna Archipelago. From approximately MYR 900–2,000 per night full board with diving as of 2026.
Seaventures Dive Rig (Mabul waters) — A converted oil rig platform moored in the Mabul Lagoon — genuinely one of the more unusual dive resort concepts in the world. Cabins are utilitarian (it is an oil rig) but the diving access is exceptional and the concept is unforgettable. Popular for its immediate house reef and early-morning Sipadan slots. From approximately MYR 800–1,500 per night with diving package as of 2026.
Getting to Semporna
The practical route is to fly into Tawau Airport (TWU) — served by AirAsia and MASwings from Kuala Lumpur and Kota Kinabalu — then take a taxi or minivan to Semporna (approximately 1.5 hours, MYR 40–60 as of 2026). Some dive operators offer airport transfer packages; confirm when booking your dive package.
From the Semporna jetty, speedboats transfer guests to Mabul and other archipelago islands in 25–40 minutes. All island transfers are coordinated through your dive resort.
