George Town Festival 2026

The George Town Festival runs through the entire month of August each year, using the heritage buildings, back lanes, and public spaces of Georgetown’s UNESCO World Heritage core zone as its primary canvas. Now in its second decade, the festival has grown from a local community celebration into an internationally recognised contemporary arts event that draws Malaysian and international artists, performers, and audiences.

What the Festival Covers

Programming spans a broad range of disciplines: visual art installations, contemporary dance, experimental theatre, live music, spoken word, film screenings, and guided heritage walks. The festival is known for commissioning site-specific work that engages with Georgetown’s particular history — the tension between colonial-era architecture and a living multicultural community.

Many events use venues that are as memorable as the work itself. Pre-war shophouses on Armenian Street and Penang Road have been transformed into gallery spaces. Temple courtyards host evening performances. The back lanes behind the clan jetties have been used as outdoor installation spaces. The former Eastern and Oriental Hotel grounds and its surrounding waterfront have hosted large-scale outdoor performances. Some works appear overnight and are gone by morning; others remain as permanent street art.

A significant proportion of events are free or low-cost, which makes the festival genuinely accessible. Ticketed performances — typically the larger theatre and dance productions — usually range from RM 30 to RM 100. The festival programme is released in advance on the George Town Festival website (georgetownfestival.com), where tickets for ticketed events can be purchased.

Planning Your Visit

Georgetown is walkable within the heritage zone, and the festival’s programming is largely concentrated in the area bounded by Jalan Penang, the waterfront, and the clan jetty area near Pengkalan Weld. A bicycle or trishaw is useful for covering the broader heritage zone without overheating in the August heat.

August is also high travel season in Malaysia, and Georgetown accommodation books out quickly. If you are visiting specifically for the festival, book at least 4 to 6 weeks ahead for heritage hotels in the core zone — such as those along Love Lane or Muntri Street — and expect prices to be higher than at other times of year. Budget guesthouses along the back lanes also fill quickly.

The festival overlaps with Hari Merdeka (Malaysia’s National Day) on 31 August, which brings additional events and a public holiday to close the month.
