Where to Stay in Kuantan
Kuantan is Pahang’s east coast capital and the main gateway city for travellers heading to Cherating or the beaches of the South China Sea coast. Most visitors stay one or two nights — long enough to visit Teluk Cempedak beach, eat at the local hawker centres, and continue north or south. Accommodation is spread across three zones, each with a different character and price range.
Named Hotels
Hyatt Regency Kuantan Resort (Teluk Chempedak Beach) — the standout beach resort near Kuantan, positioned directly on Teluk Chempedak bay with a pool, multiple restaurants, and sea-facing rooms. MYR 450–800/night (~USD 95–170).
Zenith Hotel Kuantan (Jalan Putra Square) — the best urban hotel in Kuantan city centre, rooftop pool, modern facilities. MYR 220–380/night (~USD 45–80).
MS Garden Hotel (Jalan Tun Ismail) — mid-range city hotel, reliable quality, near the main commercial area. MYR 150–280/night (~USD 30–60).
Swiss-Garden Beach Resort (Balok Beach) — beach resort on Balok Beach, north of Kuantan, with a pool and watersports. MYR 280–500/night (~USD 60–105).
Hotel Grand Continental Kuantan (Jalan Gambut) — mid-range business hotel, central, good value for transit stays. MYR 130–220/night (~USD 27–47).
Mega Hotel Kuantan (city centre) — budget-to-mid, functional, walking distance to city amenities. MYR 100–180/night (~USD 21–38).
Teluk Cempedak — Beach Access
Teluk Cempedak is a sheltered bay about 5 km from Kuantan city centre, and the most popular base for tourists. The beach is clean, calm, and walkable, with a strip of restaurants and a small hawker area above the sand.
The Hyatt Regency Kuantan Resort is the premium beach option here, with full resort facilities. Mid-range resorts run MYR 180–450 per night; MS Garden Hotel and Swiss-Garden Beach Resort cover that bracket. For budget options near the beach, several guesthouses cluster in the streets behind the main bay road at MYR 80–140 per night.
Note that the east coast monsoon season runs November through January. Some beach properties reduce rates during this period, and sea conditions can be rough. If your trip falls in those months, prioritise a hotel with a good pool.
Kuantan Town Centre — Budget and Transit
The town centre is practical rather than scenic. It puts you walking distance from Kuantan’s main wet market (Pasar Besar Kuantan), the night food stalls along Jalan Mahkota, and the bus station — useful if you are arriving by bus from KL or heading on toward Kuala Terengganu.
Zenith Hotel Kuantan is the best in-town choice for those who want comfort without the beach commute. Budget guesthouses and basic hotels here run MYR 50–120. If you are arriving late or leaving early, staying in town makes transit easier than commuting from Teluk Cempedak.
Cherating — 30 km North
Cherating is a separate village about 30 km north of Kuantan city, connected by taxi or bus. It has been a backpacker stop on the east coast circuit for decades and retains an easy-going character. Accommodation ranges from basic beach bungalows to a few mid-range chalets, most in the MYR 80–200 range.
The original Club Med in Malaysia operates just outside Cherating — not budget, but the all-inclusive format makes it a viable option for families who want a self-contained beach holiday without the logistics. Leatherback sea turtles nest at Rantau Abang, 55 km further north, between May and September.
Practical Notes
Booking.com has solid coverage of all three zones. Most properties offer free parking — useful if you are driving the east coast rather than using intercity buses. Few beach hotels in Kuantan reach the quality of what Tioman Island or the Perhentians offer, so if beach resorts are a priority, build those islands into the trip instead and use Kuantan as an overnight stop only.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Should I stay at Teluk Cempedak beach or in Kuantan city centre?
- Teluk Cempedak is the better base for beach access — the bay is sheltered and walkable, and the mid-range resorts there are the most comfortable options in the area. The city centre is useful for transit only: it puts you close to the bus station and night food stalls, but the beach is 5 km away.
- How much does accommodation cost in Kuantan?
- Mid-range resorts at Teluk Cempedak run RM180–400 per night. Budget guesthouses in the city centre cost RM50–120. Cherating bungalows, 30 km north, are RM80–200 — a good value option if surfing is the priority. The east coast monsoon (November–January) sometimes brings lower rates.
- Is Cherating worth staying at rather than Kuantan?
- Yes, if surfing or a quieter beach atmosphere is the goal. Cherating has been a backpacker stop since the 1970s and retains a laid-back character that Kuantan lacks. Accommodation is simple beach bungalows in the RM80–200 range. It is 30 km north of Kuantan — accessible as a day trip or a separate stay.
