Best Hotels in Langkawi: Pantai Cenang, Datai Bay, and Tanjung Rhu
Langkawi is an archipelago of 99 islands off the northwest coast of Malaysia, the largest of which holds most of the accommodation. The island’s tax-free status (no alcohol or cigarette duties) makes it notably cheaper for resort stays than comparable destinations in Thailand or Indonesia. That same price advantage pulls in package tourists, so parts of Pantai Cenang — the main beach strip — can feel busy, particularly in December and January.
Three areas dominate the hotel landscape: Pantai Cenang on the west coast, with the island’s most accessible beach and the greatest density of restaurants and bars; Datai Bay in the north-west, where two world-class luxury properties sit within primary rainforest; and Tanjung Rhu on the north-east tip, which offers the island’s most beautiful beach and calmer atmosphere.
Pantai Cenang: Beach, Food, and Activity
Pantai Cenang is where most visitors stay. The beach runs about 2km, the water is clean and swimmable, and the parallel road has restaurants, beach bars, dive shops, and watersport hire operating from mid-morning to late evening. It is the most practical base for a first visit to Langkawi — easy to get around, most things within walking distance, and a good range of accommodation at every price point.
Luxury
Meritus Pelangi Beach Resort & Spa — from approximately MYR 800 as of 2026 — sits directly on Pantai Cenang beach with Malay-style chalets set in landscaped gardens. The beach frontage is the best of any property on this stretch, and the pool runs parallel to the shoreline. Rooms are built in traditional longhouse style — expect wooden floors, high ceilings, and garden-facing private terraces.
Casa del Mar, Langkawi — from approximately MYR 680 as of 2026 — is a boutique Mediterranean-style property at the northern end of Pantai Cenang. Small enough (34 rooms) to feel private, with a strong restaurant and beachfront access. The design is noticeably different from the typical resort formula and suits couples over families.
Mid-range
Dash Resort Langkawi — from approximately MYR 350 as of 2026 — is a contemporary property a short walk back from the beach. Stylish rooms, a roof pool, and a solid bar. Not beachfront but the pricing reflects that, and the beach is genuinely walkable.
The Andaman’s sister property, Vivanta by Taj Rebak Island aside — for mid-range with genuine beach proximity, Campbell’s Beach apartment-style units from approximately MYR 280 as of 2026 are practical for longer stays with self-catering facilities.
Budget
Sunset Beach Resort — from approximately MYR 150 as of 2026 — is a no-frills beachfront option that is consistently rated for its location over its rooms. The rooms are dated and small, but you are paying for direct beach access at a low price point that few other Pantai Cenang properties match.
Sandy Beach Motel — from approximately MYR 130 as of 2026 — is among the oldest budget options on the strip. Very simple, but clean and on the beachfront. Air-conditioning, hot water, and a short walk to all restaurants.
Backpacker hostels in Pantai Cenang are limited. Base Camp Hostel at approximately MYR 55 per dorm bed as of 2026 is the most functional option if cost is the primary driver.
Getting around from Pantai Cenang: The main road runs the length of the beach strip. Motorbike hire is approximately MYR 30–40 per day and is the most efficient way to explore the island — roads are quiet and distances manageable. Grab operates on the island at reasonable rates (airport to Pantai Cenang is approximately MYR 25–35). Car hire starts from approximately MYR 100 per day with a Malaysian or international driving licence.
Datai Bay: Rainforest Luxury
Datai Bay is on the north-west tip of the island, accessible by a winding road through primary jungle. The bay itself is broad and calm, the sand is white, and the properties here back onto one of the oldest rainforests in the region. Datai Bay is the right choice for those who want the best of Langkawi in genuine privacy — and are willing to pay for it. There is no budget or mid-range accommodation in this zone.
The Datai Langkawi — from approximately MYR 2,800 as of 2026 — is consistently ranked among the best resorts in Asia. The design sits low in the canopy, connected by boardwalks through mature dipterocarp forest. The beach is private, the spa is serious, and the nature programme (guided walks, wildlife spotting, marine biology excursions) is genuinely educational rather than performative. The resident naturalist team identifies the white-handed gibbons audible from the villas at dawn. Three restaurants, including the Forest restaurant set in the treeline, anchor the dining. This is one of the few properties in Malaysia that justifies its price without qualification.
The Andaman, a Luxury Collection Resort — from approximately MYR 1,500 as of 2026 — sits at the other end of the same bay and is slightly more accessible in price while sharing the same rainforest-to-beach setting. The coral reef directly offshore is one of the better shallow reef dive sites in the region, and the property runs its own dive centre. The beach butler service is included across all room categories.
Getting around from Datai Bay: Datai Bay is approximately 25 minutes from Pantai Cenang by car. Both properties offer shuttle services to the main town (Kuah) and to Pantai Cenang. The isolation is intentional — most guests are self-contained during their stay.
Tanjung Rhu: Quiet Beach, Mangroves, and Calm
Tanjung Rhu is on the north-east coast, facing a shallow bay with a long arc of white sand backed by casuarina trees. It is the most photogenic beach on the main island and far less crowded than Pantai Cenang. The access road passes mangrove forests that can be explored by kayak or small boat tour. The town of Kuah (for shopping, the Eagle Square, and the ferry terminal to Kuala Perlis) is about 20 minutes away by car.
Luxury
Four Seasons Resort Langkawi — from approximately MYR 2,200 as of 2026 — opened in 2005 and remains the defining property at Tanjung Rhu. The Moorish-inspired architecture (archways, water features, shaded colonnades) is unique on the island. Private pool villas and over-water spa pavilions are the headline features, but even the standard pavilion rooms have private plunge pools. The beach here is the clearest on the island. Private boat charters, kayak hire, and the mangrove kayak tour are all arranged through the concierge.
Berjaya Langkawi Resort — from approximately MYR 450 as of 2026 — is a mid-range option in the Tanjung Rhu vicinity with chalet-style accommodation in a hillside forest setting. The beach is a short walk downhill. The property is large (390 rooms) so it lacks the intimacy of the Four Seasons but offers a reasonable mid-range entry to this quieter corner of the island.
Mid-range / Budget at Tanjung Rhu
There is very little genuine budget accommodation in the Tanjung Rhu zone. Travellers on tighter budgets should base themselves in Pantai Cenang and take a half-day trip up the coast — the drive through the mangroves and the beach itself are accessible without paying Four Seasons rates.
Getting around from Tanjung Rhu: The Four Seasons and Berjaya both operate shuttle services into Kuah and to the cable car at Gunung Mat Cincang. The Tanjung Rhu beach and mangrove area itself is best explored from the property. A Grab from Pantai Cenang to Tanjung Rhu costs approximately MYR 35–50.
Practical Notes
Best time to visit: December to March is the dry season on the west coast (Pantai Cenang, Datai Bay). Tanjung Rhu on the east coast has a different seasonal pattern — the northeast monsoon brings rougher conditions from October to January. For the Four Seasons specifically, December–March is peak season and bookings often fill two to three months ahead.
Duty-free shopping: Langkawi is a designated duty-free island. Alcohol, chocolate, and cigarettes are significantly cheaper here than on the Malaysian mainland. Most resorts take advantage of this — expect good wine lists at reasonable prices.
Island hopping: Ferries to the smaller islands (Pulau Beras Basah, Pulau Dayang Bunting) depart from the Telaga Harbour marina. Most are half-day trips that work from any base.
Airport transfers: Langkawi International Airport is approximately 20 minutes from Pantai Cenang and 30–40 minutes from Datai Bay or Tanjung Rhu. Grab is usually available for arrivals; most luxury properties offer private transfers bookable in advance.
