Fireworks mark the midnight transition to Merdeka Day (start of 31 August), coinciding with the flag-raising ceremony at Dataran Merdeka. The display is visible from a wide area of central KL. Rooftop bars and elevated viewpoints in the KLCC and Bukit Bintang areas also offer clear sightlines to the fireworks over the city centre. The official 8am parade on 31 August does not include fireworks — these are reserved for the midnight ceremony on 30 August.

What to Expect on Merdeka Day

Hari Merdeka is a public holiday across all states and federal territories. Malls, restaurants, and major attractions remain open. Many Malaysians wear or display national colours (red, white, blue) or traditional state dress. Highways are quieter than usual as most people stay local.

State capitals hold smaller versions of the national parade. Penang, Johor Bahru, Kota Bharu, and Kuching all hold well-attended state-level celebrations with processions, cultural performances, and fireworks.
