Where to Stay on Tioman Island: Village by Village
Choosing where to stay on Tioman means choosing which village to base yourself in. The island has no roads connecting the villages on its west coast — movement between them is by boat — so your choice of base determines your daily experience more than the specific property. There are six accessible villages; four are practical bases for most visitors.
Named Properties by Zone
Berjaya Tioman Resort (Tekek Beach) — the largest resort on the island, with chalets, villas, direct beach access, multiple restaurants, and a PADI dive centre. The only property with full resort facilities and reliable coverage on mainstream booking platforms. MYR 400–900/night.
Japamala Resort (Juara, east coast) — eco-boutique resort on the quieter east coast, built in timber treehouses and villa-style structures set above the beach. The most architecturally distinctive property on Tioman, and the most secluded. MYR 800–2,000/night.
Paya Beach Resort (Paya Beach) — mid-range chalets on a quiet bay with good shore snorkelling directly off the beach and a PADI dive centre on site. MYR 250–500/night.
Nazri’s Place (Juara Beach) — guesthouse on the east coast, simple rooms, and the most practical budget option for travellers who want Juara beach without resort prices. MYR 80–180/night.
Sunset Beach Resort (Genting Beach) — small guesthouse on the southern coast with decent snorkelling access nearby. MYR 100–200/night.
Tioman Island Resort (Tekek) — budget chalets near the main ferry terminal, basic but well-located for early departures. MYR 80–150/night.
Salang (North, Best for Divers)
Salang is the liveliest part of Tioman and the best base for diving. Multiple dive operators — including Ben’s Diving Centre, Salang Pusaka Resort Dive Centre, and Salang Indah — are concentrated here, giving the widest choice of guided dives, PADI courses, and equipment rental on the island. The beach is narrow but attractive, with direct shore snorkelling from the northern end.
The atmosphere is social by Tioman standards — beach-side restaurants run into the evening, and the dive community keeps guesthouses busy through peak season. Suitable for solo travellers, divers, and those who want activity options without going full resort.
Price range: MYR 70–200 per night. Fan chalets start around MYR 70; air-conditioned rooms with private bathrooms run MYR 120–200 at established guesthouses like Salang Indah Resort and Salang Pusaka Resort. Book direct or through the dive operators. Booking.com and Agoda have limited coverage of Salang properties — WhatsApp or email contact is more reliable.
Air Batang (ABC) — Mid-Island, Best for Relaxed Beach Access
ABC is a 10-minute boat ride south of Salang. The beach faces west, providing calmer water than some east-facing alternatives, and the northern end of the beach has direct shore snorkelling access. There is no dominant social scene — just a low-key strip of guesthouses and restaurants that suits travellers who want peace alongside water access.
Price range: MYR 60–180 per night. Mokhtar’s Place, ABC Chalet, and Nazri’s Place are the established names. Most are simple fan chalets with basic meals available on site. A few air-conditioned options exist at the higher end of the range. Book direct.
Tekek — Best for Convenience
Tekek is Tioman’s main settlement and the ferry arrival point for boats from Mersing and Tanjung Gemok. It has the island’s ATM (at the Berjaya resort area — confirm it is working before relying on it), the airport, petrol station, and the most shops selling basics. The beach is workable but less attractive than Salang or ABC.
Berjaya Tioman Resort — the island’s only large hotel — is located between Tekek and ABC. This is the only resort-style property with a pool, multiple restaurants, water sports, and international booking coverage. Rooms run MYR 400–900 per night. The surrounding infrastructure (including the ATM) exists largely because of the Berjaya, making Tekek useful even for non-guests who need cash or supplies.
Tioman Island Resort offers budget chalets near the ferry terminal at MYR 80–150 per night — practical for early arrivals or departures.
Budget guesthouses in Tekek itself run MYR 80–250 per night. Suitable as a base for those prioritising convenience over beach quality.
Juara (East Coast, Best for Isolation)
Juara requires a separate boat from Tekek (20–30 minutes, MYR 20–30 per person) or a 3–4 hour walk via the cross-island trail. The east-facing beach is wide, undeveloped, and genuinely quiet. Turtle nesting occurs on the beach between May and September. There is limited phone signal and virtually no nightlife.
Japamala Resort is the standout property here — timber treehouse architecture, private beach position, and a level of finish well above anything else on Tioman. Nazri’s Place covers the budget end at MYR 80–180. Accommodation overall runs MYR 60–2,000 depending on property. Suitable for those who want complete disengagement from the dive-and-beach-bar circuit.

Booking Approach
Tioman’s accommodation is not well covered by mainstream booking platforms. Booking.com and Agoda list a fraction of the available properties, often with outdated pricing and limited reviews. The practical approach:
- Contact guesthouses directly via WhatsApp (most properties list a number on a basic website or Facebook page)
- Book dive courses and accommodation together through a Salang or Tekek dive operator if combining both
- For Berjaya Tioman Resort only, use standard booking platforms — it is reliably listed
Book 6–8 weeks ahead for June–August. May, September, and October are more available. March is the reopening month after monsoon — confirm individual properties are operating before booking.
