Where to Stay in Sibu
Sibu is a working river city on the Rejang — Sarawak’s longest river — and the main transit point for express boats heading upstream to Kapit and Belaga. It is not a tourist destination in the conventional sense; there are no beaches, no major UNESCO sites, and no resort infrastructure. What Sibu offers is a genuine Chinese Foochow merchant city with a functioning waterfront market, a few colonial-era shophouses, and good food. Most travellers stay one night before or after the river journey.
Named Hotels
Sibu is primarily a transit point for longhouse visits up the Rejang River — most travellers stay one or two nights before taking the express boat upriver. A central hotel within walking distance of the esplanade and the express boat jetty is the priority.
Tanahmas Hotel (Jalan Kampung Nyabor) — Sibu’s best mid-range hotel, central, reliable business facilities, and a good breakfast. MYR 180–300/night.
Premier Hotel Sibu (Jalan Kampung Nyabor) — similar tier to Tanahmas, well-maintained, central position 5–10 minutes’ walk from the express boat terminal and the Lau King Howe wet market. MYR 160–280/night.
Hotel Kingwood (Jalan Kampung Nyabor) — mid-range, good value, walking distance to the esplanade. MYR 130–220/night.
Li Hua Hotel (Jalan Cross) — budget business hotel, clean, near the waterfront market. MYR 90–150/night.
New Capitol Hotel (central Sibu) — budget option with basic rooms near transport connections. MYR 70–120/night.
Waterfront and Market Area
The most practical location is within walking distance of the ferry terminal (Sibu Ferry Terminal) and the central market complex. Heritage shophouse guesthouses in this area run MYR 60–150 per night — functional, often family-run, and closer to the action than anything in the outer commercial zones. Rooms are clean but basic: air conditioning, private bathroom, simple breakfast in many cases.
Tanahmas Hotel and Premier Hotel Sibu are the two most reliable mid-range options, both on or near the main commercial strip at MYR 160–300. Paramount Hotel is another solid choice along the waterfront strip — slightly older in terms of fittings but good value at MYR 100–180.
Budget Guesthouses
Several older guesthouses in the streets behind the main market run at MYR 50–90 per night for a private room. These are in the traditional Sibu mould: tiled floors, ceiling fans or window air-conditioning units, straightforward breakfast nearby. Not glamorous, but honest value for a transit night.
Booking.com coverage of Sibu is limited compared to larger Malaysian cities. Some of the better-value guesthouses are not listed online and require a phone call or walk-in. If you want certainty of booking ahead, Premier Hotel or Tanahmas Hotel (both on the main commercial strip, MYR 160–300) are the safest options to book in advance.
Getting the Timing Right
Express boats to Kapit depart from Sibu Ferry Terminal several times daily, the first at approximately 5:45am. If you plan to catch an early boat, staying within walking distance of the terminal is worth the modest premium over a guesthouse further out in the commercial zone. The boat journey to Kapit takes around 2.5 hours; from Kapit, a less frequent boat continues to Belaga.
Eating While in Sibu
Sibu is well regarded for Foochow-style food — kompia (sesame bread rolls), kampua mee (dry tossed noodles with lard and char siu), and dian bian hu (rice flour soup). The hawker stalls around the central market are active from early morning until mid-afternoon. This is one of the stronger arguments for spending a proper night in Sibu rather than rushing through.
