Where to Stay on Redang Island

Redang Island operates almost entirely on a package model. Unlike the Perhentian Islands, where independent backpacker accommodation is widespread, Redang has very limited standalone budget options. Almost all visitors book through a resort that bundles accommodation, boat transfers from Merang jetty, meals, and snorkelling trips into a single package price. Independent budget travel on Redang is possible but requires more effort and is not the norm.

How Redang Packages Work

A standard Redang package covers:

  • Return speedboat from Merang jetty (45 minutes each way)
  • Accommodation (typically 2 or 3 nights)
  • Three meals per day
  • One or two guided snorkel trips with equipment

Prices are quoted per person based on twin-sharing. Single supplements apply at all properties. The package structure means the effective nightly cost includes more than just a room — comparing Redang prices to standalone guesthouse rates elsewhere is misleading.

Book directly with the resort in most cases for accurate availability and package customisation. Third-party booking sites have inconsistent coverage of Redang properties and sometimes list outdated prices.

Mid-Range Resorts (RM350–600/person/night all-in)

Coral Redang Island Resort is one of the largest properties on the island, located on Teluk Dalam on the south coast adjacent to the Marine Park’s main snorkel sites. Package deals include all meals and two snorkel trips daily. Rooms are functional — clean, basic air conditioning, standard hotel-grade furniture. The location is the selling point: the snorkelling begins immediately off the resort jetty. This is the most popular mid-range option for Malaysian families and domestic visitors. Book direct via the resort website.

Redang Reef Resort is a smaller property with a similar package structure and pricing to Coral Redang. Also located on the south coast with direct snorkel access. The quieter scale makes it a reasonable alternative if Coral Redang is full. Diving instruction is available on site.

Both properties are reliably bookable via WhatsApp contact with the resort directly. Some third-party listing exists on Agoda with variable accuracy.

Premium (RM700–1,400/person/night all-in)

The Taaras Beach & Spa Resort is the only high-end property on Redang. It occupies a dedicated bay on the island’s northwest side (Teluk Dalam) with overwater chalets, a larger main hotel block, spa facilities, and multiple dining options. Room categories range from beachfront chalets at the lower end of the premium range to overwater bungalows at the top. The snorkelling access from the Taaras’s house reef is among the best on the island.

The Taaras is the primary choice for international visitors, honeymoon couples, and those who want a significantly higher standard of comfort than the mid-range properties provide. It is bookable through the Taaras website, some international booking platforms, and selected travel agents — coverage is better than for the mid-range resorts.

Packages at the Taaras include all meals, marine activities, and transfers as standard.

Budget Options

Very limited. A small number of basic chalets operate near Pasir Panjang beach outside the main resort areas. These are standalone bookings without the all-in package structure — you arrange your own boat transfer, meals, and equipment separately. Availability changes seasonally and should be confirmed directly before planning around them.

For travellers whose priority is budget rather than comfort, the Perhentian Islands are a better-suited alternative, with a wider range of budget guesthouses and more flexible independent booking.

Booking Timing

June through August (peak season) requires booking 4–8 weeks in advance at all resorts. The Taaras fills for peak-season weekends considerably earlier than that. May and September–October are shoulder months with better availability and sometimes lower package pricing. Book early regardless of travel dates — Redang’s constrained visitor numbers under Marine Park management mean accommodation fills faster than comparable islands with more rooms.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do Redang Island resorts all operate on a package basis?
Almost all do. Standard packages include return speedboat from Merang jetty, accommodation (typically two or three nights), three meals per day, and one or two guided snorkel trips. Independent budget travel is possible but limited — the Perhentian Islands are a better fit if standalone accommodation is preferred.
What is included in a Redang Island package?
Most packages include return boat transfers from Merang jetty, accommodation, all meals, snorkel equipment, and guided snorkel trips. Diving and specific Pulau Lima excursions may be extra depending on the resort. Confirm exactly what is included before booking.
Is The Taaras the best resort on Redang?
The Taaras is the only high-end resort on the island, with overwater chalets, a spa, and house reef access rated among the best on Redang. For mid-range, Coral Redang Island Resort is the most popular option — well-located on Teluk Dalam adjacent to the main snorkel sites and a reliable choice for domestic visitors.
